A senior Cook Islands police officer says tourists are more complacent when they drive in the Cook Islands than they would be driving in their own countries.
Inspector Tere Patia says despite tourists being told the road rules, their driving habits have much room for improvement.
The comments are in light of the recent tragedy in which a 22- year-old sailor from the HMNZS Otago died in a drink driving accident.
Inspector Patia says while the majority of tourists are fine on the roads, crashes occur because of alcohol or speed or a combination of both.
