Samoa police praise village support for apprehending murder accused

Samoa's Ministry of Police and Prisons is praising swift action by the council of Sala'ilua village on Savaii for responding to a public appeal for help in arresting a man facing a murder charge.

A village matai says the 33 year-old was staying in one of the village families.

The accused, Ulavale Lealofi, of Falesiu from Upolu island was earlier released on bail to await his trial.

But the police say the hearing was delayed several times because the defendant was on the run and could not be located.

The police say Lealofi is charged with one count of murder relating to the remains found at Falesiu village last year.

He is in custody to await his trial set for December.
