The world's biggest conference on coral reefs, the International Coral Reef Symposium, is beginning in Cairns today.
Topics at the symposium are set to include the newest discoveries about life on coral reefs and how reefs can be better managed to avoid damage from human activities.
25 hundred scientists at the symposium have signed a statement of consensus, agreeing that coral reefs are being damaged by climate change.
One major talk today will centre on threats to the Great Barrier Reef, which experts say could have its world heritage status downgraded to 'in danger' if no steps are taken to prevent its decline
The symposium will run until Friday this week.
