The Speaker of Papua New Guinea's parliament, Jeffery Nape, has been arrested on bribery charges.

Mr Nape is alleged to have tried to bribe a rival candidate to drop out of the election in his province of Chimbu.

Mr Nape, who denies all charges, was released on bail and is expected to appear in court after the election.

In May, it was revealed the government's corruption watchdog had drawn up a warrant for Mr Nape's arrest in relation to more than two million US dollars in missing development funds.

Mr Nape denied those charges also.
