Fiji officer probed for alleged beating

An officer from the Fiji Military Forces is under investigation following allegations that he beat a man and his son.

FBC News has confirmed a complaint has been filed with police in Namaka and quotes the military as saying it will not condone such behaviour.

It is not clear what prompted the officer to assault the men.

The military's latest reaction is in contrast with repeated reports of abuse by the military that have been without any consequence.

Last year, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said the Fiji interim government, which is led by the military commander, had failed to make good on its commitment earlier made in Geneva to end its abuse.

The Office said Fiji appeared to have ignored its obligations to investigate allegations of torture by the military.
