American Samoa customs lifts hold on container ship

6:26 am on 11 July 2012

In American Samoa, the customs hold on the container ship Southern Lily 2 has been lifted and the ship has finally set sail after nearly three weeks in Pago Pago.

The Coast Guard cleared the freigher to leave after the owners posted a surety bond that is believed to be worth more than one million US dollars.

The bond was necessary because the US Department of Justice had informed the owners of the vessel, Pacific Direct Line it is filing a criminal case against the southern Lily 2, for alleged violations of international pollution laws.
