The Bank South Pacific has become one of the first financial institutions and major businesses in Papua New Guinea to return to Arawa in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
The Bank South Pacific's Arawa branch reopened yesterday after closing its operations at the height of the Bougainville crisis 23 years ago.
The National reports BSP's chief executive, Ian Clyne, saying that the reopening is a sign of confidence in the regions future.
He says customers are hugely relieved as it has eased the burden to travel out of Arawa to do their banking.
ABG agriculture minister, Nicholas Darku, says Bougainville's agriculture-based economy will see an expansion in the next few years and BSP's presence on the island will help in that growth.
