Nauru to add one MP after next poll

The Nauru Parliament has agreed to increase the number of MPs from 18 to 19 following the next general election.

Having an additional member is part of a political reform package that has been long sought by the President, Sprent Dabwido, in an effort to end the repeated political deadlock.

The same amendments, which included an externally selected Speaker, a leadership code and the establishment of an Ombudsman Commission, were narrowly defeated at a parliamentary sitting a month ago.

But this week President Dabwido presented the amendment separately and got the backing of eight MPs with six voting against it.

He says he has delayed the implementation until after the election in the hope that the other measures can also be passed.
