Sport: PNG impressed as Olympic Village opens

10:57 am on 17 July 2012

The Olympic Village is being officially opened in London, with countries from all across the world beginning to settle in for competition.

Papua New Guinea Chef de Mission Syd Yates is among the first wave of people to arrive and says the Village is one of the best he's seen.

"Look there's always a few teething problems and they're really very active and very keen to fix those up but I think it's going to be a sensational games. The facilities look good, everything looks really sharp and they've done as much as they could to get everything really hyped up so that the athletes can perform to their best possible that they can. The only thing that we can complain about, I suppose, is typical British weather but they expect that on the opening ceremony it all nice and fine and things will be ok."

Syd Yates says the first PNG athletes will arrive on Friday local time.
