Tahiti road block in protest at fuel price hike

1:33 pm on 20 July 2012

A French Polynesian movement has blocked a key road in Tahiti in an anti-government protest to get lower fuel prices.

Reports say one of the roads between Papeete and Faaa has been blocked with among other things rubbish and rotten fish.

Traffic has been diverted.

The action comes after unsuccessful talks between the group, Te Tau no te Hono, and the president, Oscar Temaru, who has refused to rescind the latest price hike.

The French high commission, which is responsible for security, has warned that it won't tolerate blockades even though it says the demands are legitimate.
