Cooks police to step up road controls

1:55 pm on 20 July 2012

The Cook Islands Police are increasing their presence on Rarotonga's roads in the lead up to the self-governance celebration, Te Maeva Nui, later this month, and the Pacific Leaders Forum summit in August.

Police Inspector, Terry Patia, says the general public can expect an increased police presence with daily checkpoints from this week.

Police will be focusing on speeding and drunk drivers, with the aim of reducing crashes.

They will also randomly stop drivers to check vehicle licensing and registrations.
