A 51-year-old woman in New Caledonia has died after a car hit her while she was walking on the footpath along one of Noumea's most popular beaches.
Police say the vehicle was trying to overtake on coming out of a bend in the Baie des Citrons and drove into her.
The driver tried to flee after his car flipped onto its roof.
Police say a witness helped arrest the driver.
They say he is a 22-year-old, who had been drinking.
