Tahiti fuel price hike protest disrupts traffic

6:49 pm on 24 July 2012

The French Polynesia group campaigning for the latest fuel price hike to be rescinded has caused big disruptions to traffic in Papeete.

The group Te Tau no te Hono has again been in talks with the government in its push to get the increases to be dropped.

The group has placed large vehicles near the bridge linking the port are to the city amid apparent threats to cut access, should the impasse not be resolved.

At the weekend, the group attracted several hundred people for a meeting outside the assembly, with several speakers expressing their misgivings about the way the economy is managed.
