Fiji voter registration period extended

1:49 pm on 30 July 2012

Fiji's electronic voter registration process is to continue through to 2014.

The Fiji Sun reports the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, as saying that while eight weeks is the timeframe for the registrations they will continue until 2014.

Registration began at the start of this month with a planned finish at the end of August.

Two weeks ago, the minister in charge of the elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said there would be no extension.

But Commodore Bainimarama says registration teams will try to register as many Fijians as possible within the eight weeks.

He also says one group that would need special attention were the disabled and the disadvantaged and special arrangements had to be done to cater for them.

The newspaper reports that nearly 300,000 people have so far been registered.
