A new website has been launched in Niue, aimed at saving the Niuean language.

IT entrepreneur, Emani Fakaotimanava-Lui has spearheaded the plan to get speakers of Vagahau Niue coming up with ideas for translating internet terms.

He says the project involves combining the knowledge of Niue's internet-savvy young people with the older generation who are well versed in Niuean language and culture.

"They have an opportunity to first go to our website and offer their own translations of a few thousand words, English tecnical terms, into Niuean. The next opportunity is they could be looking at Facebook in Niuean, reaching out not just to the Niueans here but right across the world."

Emani Fakaotimanava-Lui say he hopes this will lead to all sorts of everyday content uploaded in the language including the Bible, legislation and local culture.
