Fiji's AG says voter registration ahead of target

4:22 am on 7 August 2012

Voter registration in Fiji is ahead of target, with over 360 thousand people registered.

The target is to register 600 thousand people in 60 days, and after 34 days 362,197 Fijians are registered to vote.

On average the elections office needs 10 thousand people to register a day.

Fiji's Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, says this puts them about 22,000 people ahead of their target.

"We expect to have it 10 thousand for the rest of the days, but we don't necessarily expect it to be 10 thousand every single day, if you know what I mean. There are certain days that are slower numbers, like on a Sunday sometimes it gets a bit slow but we are very pleased, we're about 22 thousand numbers ahead and we hope to ensure that we reach 600 thousand."

Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum says it's a national effort to reach the target and the government continues to encourage people to make sure they are registered.
