11:09 am on 8 August 2012

The President of Samoa's Olympic Committee says changes may be needed in how the country's athletes prepare for future Olympic tournaments.

The country's top medal hope in London, weightlifter Ele Opeloge, finished sixth after her Games build up was hampered by a series of illnesses.

The President of SASNOC, Tapasu Leung Wai, says despite the absence of a medal he is satisified with the competitiveness of Samoa's athletes.

But he says if they want to take the next step in four years time some things will need to change.

"We have learned what we should do and we should go back now and look at our methods of preparedness. I guess the other drawback was we kept our athletes at home and I think that some interferences with normal family affairs and family interference, so that is why we are looking at seriously how can we prepare our elite athletes before major competition."

Samoa still has three athletes to compete over the coming days in canoeing and taekwando.

Meanwhile in Pacific results on day 12, Nauru weightlifter Itte Detenamo finished 14th in the men's over 105kg class, after lifting a total of 390kg.
