Fiji papaya production yet to recover from floods

The Fiji Agriculture Department says the papaya industry in the Western Division is yet to fully recover from this year's devastating floods.

The department decided to stage this year's Agriculture Show in the Western Division for the first time, as a way to encourage farmers who have been affected by the two floods.

The Show's co-ordinator, Eliki Tikoidraubuta, says most farmers have recovered remarkably well, and it's hoped farmers will have fully bounced back by November.

However, he says recovery for the papaya industry will take longer.

"The industry has suffered quite intensive damage during the floods and we are going back to trying to revive the papaya industry in terms of production. We've seen quite a dramatic drop in production since the last floods but we are putting in measures to try and ensure that the new papaya growth can reproduce in another six months or so."

Eliki Tikoidraubuta says growing more crops and better food security are the main focus of the agriculture show.
