CNMI house wants Governor to order Attorney General's resignation

House members in the Northern Mariana Islands are calling on the Governor to order the resignation of the Attorney General, Edward Buckingham.

The House members say they have lost confidence in Mr Buckingham, describing him as a criminal defendant who has failed to appear in court despite being summoned.

The Chair of the House Judiciary and Governmental Operations Committee, Ralph Demapan, has pre-filed a resolution formally requesting the Governor to ask for Mr Buckingham's resignation.

He left the CNMI on Saturday, minutes after an FBI agent served him a penal summons to appear in court two days later in connection with criminal charges filed against him by the Office of the Public Auditor.

The criminal charges include the allegation that the Attorney General hosted a political candidate's party at the Governor's house in August 2010.
