Samoa villagers maintain roadblock over land dispute

7:41 am on 17 August 2012

Samoa's Prime Minister says a roadblock over a land dispute by Satapuala villagers is a rebellion against the government.

Armed Samoa police yesterday cleared the roadblock, set up in protest at plans to build a hospital on disputed land.

The blockade applied to one lane of the main road from Apia to Faleolo International Airport and targetted police vehicles.

Our correspondent says a huge armed police contingent, accompanied by fire and emergency vehicles, moved in.

The Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, says those involved must be rounded up and charged.

He says the land claims have been through the courts many times and the village has always lost.

Talamua online reports him as saying the Government will not sit idle as such disorder takes place.
