A human rights group in Indonesia's Papua region, ELSHAM, reports that it has found evidence of 749 acts of violence committed by authorities against the people in Papua.

In a new book, 'The Past and Never Past' it says most of this violence occurred during arbitrary arrests and detentions.

In three months of research around the region, 108 people gave testimony about human rights violations.

The violence includes 86 deaths as the result of torture, 234 cases of arbitrary arrests and detention, 181 instances of military operations including evictions of the civilian population and 97 cases of torture and ill-treatment.
