Papua New Guinea's opposition has criticised proposed legislation that would exonerate all leaders under investigation for corruption.
Henganofi's newly-elected independent MP Robert Atiyafa is preparing a private member's bill proposing that all inquiries, investigations and tribunals which implicate leaders and prominent persons be closed.
The deputy opposition leader warns that the bill would legalise corruption.
Sam Basil says it seems to be an attempt to defuse controversies involving the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill and his coalition partners.
"As long as a new Prime Minister appointed into the position that doesn't have any links with the old Prime Ministers and the veteran politicians, we can dig out and prosecute all the controversies. If those leaders are still in government, nothing will be done and we believe that O'Neill's camp is infested with those leaders. And we believe that one day we will turn the wheel around and we will make sure that those controversies are investigated and people held accountable."
