A refugee activist says the Australian government's plans to send some asylum seekers, who are currently on a hunger strike, to Nauru, are chaotic.
About 100 male asylum seekers on Christmas Island launched a hunger strike on Friday, in protest at the prospect of being relocated to a new detention centre on Nauru for the processing of their claims for refugee status.
The spokesperson for the Sydney-based Refugee Action Coalition, Ian Rintoul says some of the protestors have now been told they will not be moved to Nauru and says they are confused over the government's plans.
"I think we are seeing the same kind of thing that we saw under Howard. Just administrative confusion and disorganisation which led to the most horrendous mistakes being made in terms of the processing, even when people were sent to Nauru. So I think we're going to see a lot of confusion before the government settles on any particular plan of action."
Ian Rintoul says he hopes there will be some sort of legal action in Australia to prevent asylum seekers being moved to Nauru.
