Pacific Forum kicks off in Rarotonga

3:11 pm on 29 August 2012

The official opening of the Pacific Islands Forum meeting is beginning in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands now.

Leaders are arriving at the National Auditorium and our reporter Megan Whelan is there.

"Leaders are being brought into the auditorium on a pa'ata by local warriors. Each leader will be accompanied by students from schools across the Cook Islands and then welcomed by the Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna. As well as cultural performances, Mr Puna is expected to sing at the opening. The New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key, will also address the leaders as the outgoing chairperson of the Forum. Tomorrow leaders meet for the main plenary session of the Forum ahead of their retreat on Aitutaki and the arrival of the United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton."
