CNMI impeachment move unlikely to have numbers

12:37 pm on 3 September 2012

In the Northern Marianas, members of the House of Representatives seeking to impeach the Governor, Benigno Fitial, are finding it hard to get support for their resolution.

At least 14 votes from the 20-member House are needed to impeach the governor, and at least six affirmative votes in the nine-member Senate are needed to convict him.

But say far they have just 8 definitive yes votes in the House.

The resolution details Mr Fitial's huge secret deal with a Delaware based company offering to build a power station, his failure to nominate a chief justice and members of the Public Utilities Commission, and his failure to pay full contributions to the NMI Retirement Fund over the past 6 years.
