The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says clearing unexploded bombs and shells from the Second World War is crucial for the stability and prosperity of affected Pacific Island countries.
Mrs Clinton announced more support from the US to reduce the amount of unexploded ordnance in the region at last week's Pacific Islands Forum.
The US has committed an extra 3 and a half million US dollars in funds and training for local people to do the job.
"Decaying ordnance leaks chemicals that pollute the water and soil that makes it harder for people to develop their land, promote tourism and and spark economic growth. Ordnance and small arms can be recovered and used by criminals."
