CNMI's Rota cutoff as Freedom Air flights grounded

10:11 am on 4 September 2012

Daily and direct passenger flights to and from Rota in the Northern Mariana Islands have been derailed since Saturday as a result of mechanical problems.

The airline Freedom Air's main aircraft has encountered mechanical problems.

The airline's downed 30-seater aircraft flies daily between Rota and Saipan.

There has been no airline passenger and mail service to and from Rota since Saturday.

A Freedom Air spokesperson, Amjad Farhoud, announced in July that the inter-island carrier needs an additional 600,000 US dollar loan from the Commonwealth Development Authority to allow it to continue its operations for the next six months.
