Clinton urges dialogue on Papua

1:43 pm on 4 September 2012

The United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged consultation between the Indonesian government and the people of Papua to resolve conflict in the disputed Indonesian region.

Mrs Clinton says dialogue would help address Papuan concerns, help resolve conflict peacefully and improve governance and development.

She stressed the need for inclusive consultation and implementation of the special autonomy law for Papua.

Mrs Clinton says the United States deplores violence of any sort in the region and and says there should be full and transparent investigations under the rule of law to make sure lessons are learned.

But the Secretary of State praised the Indoensian government for an enormous amount of good work done and she says the US will continue to work with Indonesia and raise issues as necessary.
