Sport: Fiji's Delana says athletes need heart to succeed

Fiji's Iliesa Delana is hopeful his victory can inspire the next wave of Paralympic champions in his homeland but says the path to gold is not an easy one.

The 27 year-old became the first Pacific athlete to win an Olympic or Paralympic gold medal yesterday in the men's high jump.

Delana says he can't wait to return home and share his victory with the rest of the country and says he's optimistic others might now follow in his footsteps.

"It will depend on how the athletes will do their training - if they really have the heart - but like I said I went through struggles. The olympic sports is not that recognised in Fiji like sevens rugby and other sports. Sometimes I don't have fare to go to training but the heart was there and that's what keeps me moving until this level."
