American Samoa elections office seeks more money

1:21 pm on 6 September 2012

American Samoa's chief election officer says the upcoming elections will be the most costly in the territory's history because of the number of candidates running for office.

Soliai Tuipine Fuimaono says the proposed budget of 200-thousand US dollars will not be enough.

Six teams are vying for governor and lieutenant governor while five candidates are competing for the US Congressional seat.

There are 61 candidates seeking the 20 House of Representatives seats.

Soliai is seeking additional funding from the 6 point 8 million dollars the government is getting from the tobacco settlement.

He says federal assistance the election office use to get has been reduced, while funding under the Help American Vote Act is no longer available.
