Fiji begins National Library Week today with a push to encourage young people to take up reading.
Mobile reading booths have been set up and will make their way down the west-coast of Viti Levu during the week, beginning today in Raki Raki and finishing in Sigatoka this weekend.
The reading booths will include books in English, as well as some in the vernacular languages of iTaukei and Hindustani.
The Senior Librarian at the Library Service of Fiji Anaseini Jese says there will be activities at libraries such as story-telling and other literacy-lifting programmes.
Ms Jese says the theme this year is "Reading Unlocks the Future", a simple and effective message for development.
She says reading opens the mind and broadens future endeavours.
"We see it as the pathway for moving forward and getting ahead. This is true for young people who are still in school today, and it is for parents and those who are responsible for children to instil this message to the young ones."
