A report from a United Nations Special Rapporteur says the United States Government must provide additional compensation so awards made to Marshall Islands nuclear test victims can be paid.
The report, prepared by Calin Georgescu, also calls for the declassification of secret reports on the US nuclear test programme to end what he calls a 'legacy of distrust.'

"The Nuclear Claims Tribunal awarded over two billion US dollars in personal injury and land damage claims resulting from the nuclear tests, but did not pay most of this because a 150 million dollar fund, provided by the US, was exhausted. Mr Georgescu, who visited the Marshall Islands in March, also says the UN has an ongoing obligation to encourage a final and just resolution for the Marshallese people. He says UN agencies and departments need to stand in international solidarity with the Marshallese people as they face the challenge of overcoming the legacy of nuclear testing. The report will be officially reported to and discussed by the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday in Geneva."
