An Estonian national, Risto Harmat, who was charged by Fiji police following the escape from the country of former regime insider, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, has been acquitted.

He faced a charge of attempting to defeat the cause of justice when Ratu Mara, who was facing sedition charges, fled to Tonga last year.

Fiji Village reports that in the Suva Magistrates Court judge Mohammed Saneem says the circumstantial evidence in the case is more focused on proving the escape of Ratu Mara.

Magistrate Saneem says there is no evidence that would show collusion between the two and neither has a motive been established.
