Fiji prison escapees in hospital after being recaptured by police

7:43 pm on 25 September 2012

Four of the five Fiji prison inmates who escaped near Suva remain in hospital after being recaptured by police.

They escaped from the medium security jail at Naboro on Monday last week, and were recaptured on an island near Suva on Friday night.

All four have been in hospital since their arrests, with the Fiji Times saying one, Tevita Sugu, needed emergency treatment.

Their initial court appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court was rescheduled from Monday until the 1st of October because the injured men were unable to attend.

The acting assistant Police Commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu, refuses to be drawn on how the prisoners may have been injured.

The fifth escaped prisoner was recaptured early on this morning (Tuesday).

He has not needed hospital care.
