Samoa, Tonga and American Samoa will be marking the third anniversary of the devastating earthquake and tsunami this weekend.

186 people were killed after an 8.1 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami which destroyed whole villages and livelihoods.

Kim Nelson, from the Sinalei Reef Resort on the South Coast of Upolu island in Samoa says the resort's restaurant and beach fales were washed away, but it has recovered well.

"You still see signs as far as the sea is concerned, you know the coral, the reef, it sustained big damage there. We've been able to get all our buildings back. We are a hundred percent functional. So three years later we're doing okay."

Kim Nelson says the resort has installed a siren and introduced a system to take guests to safety if another tsunami occurs.
