American Samoa House approves bill to repeal death penalty

6:10 pm on 3 October 2012

The American Samoa House of Representatives has approved the Togiola administration bill to repeal the death penalty.

But with only two days left in the current legislative session, which ends at the close of business tomorrow, there is no chance of the measure getting any endorsement by Senators.

Repealing the death penalty would leave life in prison as punishment for a person convicted of first degree murder.

A person sentenced to life in prison, is not eligible for parole for 40 years.

Arguments to abolish the death penalty included statements that American Samoa is a Christian territory.
