CNMI hospital charges poised to soar

Proposed emergency regulation in the Northern Marianas will see room rates at the territory's only hospital rise by more than 300 percent.

A semi-private room at the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation hospital is to cost more than 1,000 US dollars a day compared to the old rate of 300.

A plan administrator for NetCare Insurance Jerry Crisostomo says these prices are significantly higher than what is being paid in neighbouring Guam and several other US states.

He says more people in the Northern Marianas will go un-insured as a result of these changes and may be forced to seek health care away from the islands.

Mr Crisostomo has now asked the hospital to replace the announced fee increase with a 20-percent across-the-board hike.
