Director of American Samoa Hawaii Cable company considers second cable

The director of the company American Samoa Hawaii Cable says it is considering a second submarine fiber cable in the territory.

Adolfo Montenegro says the new cable will most likely be connected in Fiji.

Mr Montenegro says the company is also considering serving Samoa but it has not yet made an offer to Samoa.

He says the system may initially be setup for 10-40 gigabytes per second but it can be designed for higher capacities.

He says preliminary technical studies have been commissioned and financial analysis are underway.

At a cabinet meeting last week, Governor Togiola Tulafono cited the need to increase cable capacity and eliminate vulnerability of the Hawaii-American Samoa Cable as some of the reasons for investing in the new submarine fiber optic cable.
