Solomons' SICA discourages use of guns

The Solomon Islands Christian Association is discouraging the use of guns to resolve conflicts, following a logger's brush with death in north east Guadalcanal.

The Solomon Star reports that an unidentified man allegedly fired gunshots which grazed the forehead of an Asian logger near Geza village over the weekend.

The man was treated at the National Referral Hospital and Tetere police are conducting an invesitigation into the incident.

SICA's general secretary says people want to be able to work in peace and the time for using guns to solve problems is over.

James Funa says it is sad that there are people who did not hand in their guns upon the arrival of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands in 2003.

He says it shows that people are still feeling insecure in their community but it is time to relinquish arms and live a normal life.
