Talks planned in PNG over Australia's Manus camp

5:13 pm on 18 October 2012

Papua New Guinea's Immigration Minister, Rimbink Pato, is hoping to meet the Manus Governor, Charlie Benjamin, after criticism the province has not been properly consulted over Australian plans to send asylum seekers to the island.

Mr Benjamin says his administration had expected the province would be involved in operating the detention camp and that it would also receive an aid package from Australia but nothing has been forthcoming.

Mr Pato says he wants to meet the governor to iron out any misunderstanding that could have arisen over the past couple of weeks.

The newspaper, The National, reports Mr Pato as saying the government had said all along the people of Manus would be fully engaged in consultations at all levels regarding the establishment of the centre and its operations.

He says when a site for the permanent processing facility is identified, the opportunity for local companies to be fully engaged will be vigorously pursued.
