Papua rally in Jayapura broken up, say reports

4:05 pm on 23 October 2012

Unconfirmed reports from Indonesia's Papua region say security forces have begun breaking up a mass rally by the West Papua National Committee, or KNPB.

The reports by West Papua media say thousands of people had gathered for the rally by the pro-independence group.

Initial reports say police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The incident comes after a major security operation in Wamena, in the Highlands, last week.

There is restricted media access to Papua where there is a continued low-level insurgency against Indonesian rule.
