American Samoa candidate wants bingo curbs

A woman running for the American Samoa House of Representatives has pledged to restrict bingo nights in the territory if elected.

Su'a Lucia Alefosio Bartley says parents are so desperate to pay the bills that they go and play bingo every night, leaving their children at home to do whatever they want.

She told a forum for candidates that the game must be controlled because it's affecting families and if elected she will work to limit bingo to weekends and holidays.

Gambling is illegal in American Samoa, but there are allowances for games of chance for charity.

Bingo nights are a principal fundraiser for church groups, with games held on most days, that include large cash prizes.
