CNMI considers how to take child obesity and teen pregnancy

The high rates of child obesity and teen pregnancy in Northern Marianas schools are seen as key challenges in the Public School System.

According to a 2011 study on students' body mass index, or BMI, only 56 percent of students from kindergarten to high school have healthy weights.

The school system is also trying to address the high number of teens who admit to sexual activity.

A study last year among high school students shows 51 percent of the respondents admitted engaging in sexual acts.

The PSS will soon be able to improve its response with a 250 thousand US dollar federal grant from the Hawaii Youth Network to provide assistance and advice.
