Australia rejects claims of internet restriction at Nauru camp

The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship is refuting reports of internet and phone restrictions in Australia's detention centre on Nauru.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Immigration says the asylum seekers are allotted 30 minutes online every other day.

She also says detainees are entitled to an arrival call, and there are landlines available for use.

The Department says the booking system is necessary to accommodate the large number of inmates at the facility and the limited bandwidth on Nauru.

As to claims that detainees are restricted from contacting international media, the Department says they are welcome to contact the media if they so wish.
