SDL pushes Fijian language for public service appointments

2:34 pm on 1 November 2012

Fiji's SDL Party says fluency in the Fijian language should be a pre-condition to entering the public service.

The indigenous language is one of three main languages in Fiji, with the others being English and Hindi.

A senior party member, Dr Tupeni Baba, says the values reflected in the Fijian language are key to uniting the country.

Dr Baba says the policy has been outlined in a submission to the Constitution Commission.

"We can't use a foreign language to unite the people of Fiji because it's foreign to us, doesn't recognise the values and the world view [sic], all those imporant aspects of our history that we carry within the Fijian language. And it is important for people to understand that when they join the public service, and that's the basis of our submission to the Constitution Commission."

According to the Fijivillage website, the interim prime minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has described the SDL proposal as a big joke.

Commodore Bainimarama has already stressed that the common name for all Fiji citizens is Fijian and indigenous Fijians are called i-Taukei.
