Manihiki in Cooks eyes solar power

4:05 pm on 6 November 2012

The Cook Islands Government has been looking at sites for solar power generation on the northern atoll of Manihiki, which has just ended power rationing after a diesel fuel shortage.

The island had to borrow fuel from neighbouring Rakahanga but relief arrived last week with a substantial delivery that should see Manihiki through to the end of the year.

The mayor, Ngamata Napara, says rationing didn't pose too many problems for the island.

She says investigations have been conducted into Manihiki generating its own renewable energy through solar power.

"We have just had the people from the Renewable Energy Department from Rarotonga, the Ministry from Rarotonga, their experts came up here, identified the sites and then we talked to the landowners, talked to the community. And we are just waiting for more negotiations with them [the national government]"
