Sport: IRB threaten sanctions in club v country row

11:09 am on 9 November 2012

The International Rugby Board has waded into the club versus country debate, saying it's prepared to impose "significant sanctions" if it found examples of players being prevented from representing their country.

The global governing body says it'll be keeping a close eye on the issue during this month's international matches in Europe in the wake of allegations that the French club Racing Metro paid players to not be available for the Fiji World Cup squad.

The Fiji and French Rugby Unions have both filed complaints with Racing against Jone Qovu's unavailability for Fiji's current European tour, after he played a club match despite being deemed injured.

Fiji open their tour against England at Twickenham on Sunday with lock Apisai Ratuniyarawa and winger Samu Wara named to make their test debut.
