Sport: Youthful look to Judo World Cup event

11:43 am on 15 November 2012

The director of this week's Judo World Cup event in Apia says he's pleasantly surprised at the high turn-out of competitors.

It's the first major tournament since the London Olympics and Francois Martel says, with the Olympic countdown now over, they were expecting less people to show up.

He says with most countries now looking ahead to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Rio Olympics a lot of those taking part this week are young.

"Russia is sending up an entire men's team - seven athletes - that are essentially really coming up through the ranks, probably starting preparation for Rio in 2016 - that is good to see."
