Three police in Tonga now facing manslaughter charges after man bashed at party

Three Tongan police officers have now been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a 21 year old man at a party on Tongatapu last Thursday night.

The man, who had head injuries, was rushed to Vaiola Hospital but declared dead on arrival.

The police commissioner, Grant O'Fee says the 3 police officers, who were also at the party, got in a fight with the dead man.

They have been remanded in custody to appear again on Wednesday.

Mr O'Fee says the case can't compared with the death of New Zealand police man Kali Fungavaka in August, which resulted in five Tongan police being charged with manslaughter.

But he says is it the very last thing the force needed.

"I don't think people should compare this with what happened with Kali Fungavaka. This is a very different set of circumstances and I really don't want to go into any more detail than that but it is a very different circumstance to what happened with the very tragic death of Kali Fungavaka."
