Electoral challenge against only woman elected to American Samoa House

8:02 am on 23 November 2012

The only woman to win a seat in the American Samoa House of Representatives in the recent general elecitons, Vui FLorence Saulo, is asking the court to dismiss a challenge against her eligibility,

The challenge is being brought by two unsucessful female candidates in the Tuala-uta election, Esther Wall and Lucia Bartley.

They allege that Vui and Chief Election Officer Soliai Tuipine committed election fraud.

They claim that the chief election officer didn't require Vui to produce a birth certificate in order to be a qualified candidate for the House election.

They are under the belief that Vui is a citizen of Samoa and should have been disqualified.
